The Quiet Book Club Selection Votes Are In, and the Winner Is…

Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson!

Last Thursday, I asked you to vote on which of three books you’d like to read for the first meeting of the Quiet Online Book Club. Thank you so much for your enthusiastic response.

The results were:

Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson: 29 votes

Super Sad True Love Story, by Gary Shteyngart: 28 votes

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz:  18 votes

I hope you’re happy with the selection. I, for one, am really looking forward to this. Longtime readers of this blog know that I read mostly non-fiction and have been craving more fiction in my life. So, thanks to the QUIET Online Book Club for nudging me in that direction!

Here’s how the Book Club will work: You can go here to order a copy of Gilead. We’ll have a month to read the book. For consistency’s sake, I’m going to pick a regular date and time for our online meetings: the third Tuesday of every month, from 8 to 9 pm. I hope this works for most people.

So, our first meeting will be on Tuesday, August 16th, from 8 to 9 pm, Eastern Standard Time. The discussion can continue after 9 pm and into the next day, but I’d like to set aside one hour where we all aim to be there at once.

Before the meeting, I’ll send you detailed instructions of how to get to the Facebook page.

For now, happy reading, and thank you again for your enthusiasm!

P.S. I hope this meeting night and time suits most of you. It would be helpful if you’d let me know, yes or no, whether it works.

That’s noon here, I’ll be at work. I think you’ll find that the group will be mostly Americans, it will be interesting to see how it works out.

That’ll be OK. Dinner time here, but on the Internet nobody knows you’re eating. I started reading Gilead this evening and am thoroughly enjoying it - it’s an introvert’s delight. Not a book I would have thought to read, so I’m happy it was the choice.

    1. Susan Cain on 23.07.2011 at 07:02 (Reply)

Same here, Matthew. Started it last night and loving it, including its meditative nature. And actually I too wouldn’t have thought to read it until I started thinking about good selections for the Book Club.

I live in Maine, 8 -9 works for me. Maybe want to change it up for different books to attract other time zones.

  17. Mary on 27.07.2011 at 13:59 (Reply)

    Lovely book suggestions!

Is this all on Facebook? What if I don’t have Facebook? (Don’t really want it)

    1. Susan Cain on 27.07.2011 at 19:40 (Reply)

Good question! Well, our first book chat will be on Facebook. After that I might switch the location. You would need to sign on to FB to participate, but you don’t actually have to DO anything in FB other than have an account. That would be enough to enable you to “like” my FB page and then participate. (I will provide instructions nearer to the date). So I encourage you not to let that stand in your way… I’ve started reading Gilead and it’s terrific!

  18. [...] And one final reading suggestion: Gilead, our first QUIET Online Book Club reading pick. Remember, we’ll meet online to talk about the book on Tuesday, August 16, 8 to 9 p.m., [...]
