I’m a freelance writer/retired humor columnist, 42 years old, married with kids, INTJ.

As a quick aside, I nearly cried when I saw the last 3 of the 24 traits because I felt it was unflattering and said bad things about my character. After I stopped over-thinking it, I realized I still selected “like me” on most of them. They just didn’t calculate as high as these top 5:

    Character Strength # 1
    Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence
You notice and appreciate beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in all domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience.

You love learning new things, whether in a class or on your own. You have always loved school, reading, and museums-anywhere and everywhere there is an opportunity to learn.

    Character Strength # 5

I am in a “hermit phase” and have been for at least a year. When in the hermit phase I am INFJ, when in social phase I am usually ENFP. I’m definitely feeling introverted at present.
My results were Appreciation of Beauty
    Love of Learning
    Perspective
    Social Intelligence
    Judgement
I think that Spirituality would have been in the top five, but the questions seemed to ask about faith, which I took to mean a faith in a particular religion, which I don’t have, since Buddhism is not a religion to me, but more a philosophy. I focus on spiritual thought often during the day.

Actually have taken the Myers-Briggs twice. Both times nearly off the scale NFP. Once, borderline E, other time borderline I.

However, I am certain I am an introvert (and my 10 out of 12 on your quiz seems to support this), and becoming more so as I mature. When I took the M-B I was in my young 20s and desperately wanted to be an extrovert, which can influence that test since many of the questions ask what you value, not what you are. I now accept myself as I am. :) Can’t wait to read your book!

Top 5: Perspective, Gratitude, Kindness, Love of Learning, and Creativity.

  133. Annette Vaillancourt, Ph.d. on 13.06.2014 at 20:08 (Reply)

I have the advantage of having taken VIA assessment 3 times in the last 10 years, so approximately every 5 years starting in 2003. I am currently 60 years old.

This gives me a unique perspective on how my character strengths have changed over time, especially when right in the middle of those 10 years I:

    doubled my income
    lost 70 pounds
moved to Saint Louis and am starting a new business
and a whole bunch of other things!

So I charted out all 24 Strengths and compared the changes across those years.

    Here’s what I concluded…

There were 8 top strengths that hardly varied at all over 10 years. These are presented in order of importance. In the parenthesis are the order they are ranked in 2003, 2008 and 2014 respectively. This is followed by the meaning of each strength and my commentary.

The top 4 have the least variability and are consistently top character strengths for me.

Humor (2, 5, 1) – You like to laugh and tease. Bringing smiles to other people is important to you. You try to see the light side of all situations.

Curiosity (9, 3, 3) – You are curious about everything. You are always asking questions, and you find all subjects and topics fascinating. You like exploration and discovery.

Love of Learning (1, 6, 4) – You love learning new things, whether in a class or on your own. You have always loved school, reading, and museums-anywhere and everywhere there is an opportunity to learn.

Creativity (4, 7, 6) – Thinking of new ways to do things is a crucial part of who you are. You are never content with doing something the conventional way if a better way is possible.

Perseverance is the MOST consistent and has been my #10 strength throughout the years, despite changes in circumstances, income and age. This is the strength I consider to account for most of my success in life.

Perseverance (10, 10, 10) – You work hard to finish what you start. No matter the project, you “get it out the door” in timely fashion. You do not get distracted when you work, and you take satisfaction in completing tasks.

The next 3 strengths varied the most over the 10 years, but still were in the top half of the list.

Social Intelligence (3, 8, 9) – You are aware of the motives and feelings of other people. You know what to do to fit in to different social situations, and you know what to do to put others at ease. My guess about why this went down the older and more affluent I got was because I become less “co-dependent” in that same time.

Judgment (6, 4, 12) – Thinking things through and examining them from all sides are important aspects of who you are. You do not jump to conclusions, and you rely only on solid evidence to make your decisions. You are able to change your mind. My guess as to why this dropped in importance lately is that I’m surrendering more to the guidance of Spirit.

Honesty (8, 11, 2) – You are an honest person, not only by speaking the truth but by living your life in a genuine and authentic way. You are down to earth and without pretense; you are a “real” person. My guess as to why this has increased lately is I’m becoming more fearless.

What strengths varied widely and why do I think that was?

Self-Regulation (20, 9, 19) – You self-consciously regulate what you feel and what you do. You are a disciplined person. You are in control of your appetites and your emotions, not vice versa.

Zest (12, 2, 16) – Regardless of what you do, you approach it with excitement and energy. You never do anything halfway or halfheartedly. For you, life is an adventure.

Perspective (11, 1, 5) – Although you may not think of yourself as wise, your friends hold this view of you. They value your perspective on matters and turn to you for advice. You have a way of looking at the world that makes sense to others and to yourself.

Interesting! Self-Regulation and Zest shot up in 2008 when I doubled my income and started training in karate. They dropped almost as low or lower than before because I’m 60, post-menopausal and exhausted at the moment. I suspect this is a correlation, not a causal factor, but I wonder what will happen, what I will be reporting at 65 years old, when I focus on regaining self-regulation and zest. I like that I had a HUGE shift in perspective in 2008, the year I doubled my income. I’m glad it has remained in the top 5!

What strengths continued to grow over the 10 years? In fact, all of these went from the bottom half of the list to the top half!

Love (22,15, 11) – an 11 point difference! – You value close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated. The people to whom you feel most close are the same people who feel most close to you. I attribute this change to my new career as the Elite SoulMate Coach and my commitment to spend the next 20 years of my life embodying love.

Gratitude (17, 14, 7) – a 10 point difference – You are aware of the good things that happen to you, and you never take them for granted. Your friends and family members know that you are a grateful person because you always take the time to express your thanks.

Hope (13, 12, 8) – You expect the best in the future, and you work to achieve it. You believe that the future is something that you can control.

This explains why I see myself as “more spiritual” now, as these are the “fruits” of a spiritual practice. But on the measured character strength of Spirituality my rankings over the years were (5, 13, 13). So it looks like it became less important over time. For the assessment they define spirituality as “You have strong and coherent beliefs about the higher purpose and meaning of the universe. You know where you fit in the larger scheme. Your beliefs shape your actions and are a source of comfort to you.” I remember deciding sometime within the past 10 years that I needed to shift from beliefs to practicing my spirituality, so I think that’s what accounts for the increase in Love, gratitude and hope.

What dropped off dramatically over the 10 years?

Prudence (7, 18, 18) – You are a careful person, and your choices are consistently prudent ones. You do not say or do things that you might later regret. That’s interesting that I was more “careful” when I was younger and made less money!

What about the bottom half of the list?

Teamwork (24,24,23) and humility (23, 23, 24) took turns being at the bottom of the list! LOL! I guess I get an “F” in “plays well with others!” Or that means I’m truly an Entrepreneur – confident and working towards a singular vision

Appreciation of beauty and excellence (22, 21, 16) – You notice and appreciate beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in all domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience. This tells me I didn’t take a lot of time to “stop and smell (plant or pick) the roses” for the last 10 years. That sounds about right. No wonder I’m tired!

Other than those few, the rest of the bottom half of the list didn’t vary much from year to year.
